ANother way is to rent a lot of movies and put the subtitles in spanish so u listen in english and read in spanish.

where are you from? you can start by speaking w/ a friend that speaks both. u can also try to watch movies or tv shows w/ spanish captions or watch them in spanish once you know what they say in english…

First off, start with the ABCs. Learn the pronunciation of the letters. Then work on the numbers. Once you feel like you have those down work your way towards grammar. When you feel comfortable with the grammar then you can start to build up your vocabulary. Treat it as if you’re starting kindergarten all over again. If you have a library card go to your local library and check out anything and everything you can that will benefit you in learning Spanish. If you don’t have a library card, it’s easy to get one and best of all they’re free! There are also tons of free resources on the Internet. Just google “learn Spanish”, “learning Spanish”, “Spanish grammar”, “Spanish verbs”, “Spanish nouns”, etc. Start listening to music in Spanish. Since you said you recently moved to an area where a lot of people speak Spanish, I’m guessing there are probably a few radio stations in Spanish so you could check those out. Also, check out the Spanish television channels. It’s okay if you don’t understand what you hear, because it’s helping you hear native speakers and will help you greatly with pronunciation. I’m not sure how fast you want to learn or how fast you’re able to learn, but if you follow these steps I think you could be able to do basic Spanish anywhere from 6 months to a year.

I had the same problem when I moved to a new neighborhood in California. A friend gave me the names of some courses and I ended up learning to speak very good conversational Spanish within 2 months. It was good enough for me to understand people and make myself understood very clearly. After that, I just kept practicing and practicing until I speak it without thinking now. I have referenced the courses below.
I actually used the first one on the list reviewed.

No matter which way you are going to learn it,it will take very many years.
You can learn basic Spanish of about 1,000 words in a short time.Some people may even understand what you are saying.You will understand very little of what they say to you.You need exposure.Read,write,listen and speak.It is the only way.You did not learn English overnight or in 4 years either.Dios le bendiga.

What really helps is to watch tv in,read the paper, and listen to the music in spanish I know is hard to understand at first but as much as you can do it you will get it good luck!
