How competitive is admission to the Middlebury Summer Graduate program in Spanish?
Steve & Beth D asked:
I have a BA in Spanish and I am a Spanish teacher. Looking into Middlebury’s summer program for my MA. Since Middlebury is a selective school overall I was wondering how competitive their graduate admissions are for the summer program. I have a 3.9 GPA and have 30 semester hours of study abroad credit from my undergraduate degree. I lived in Spain for 3 years.

Middlebury’s graduate admissions are extremely competitive and highly selective. An excellent GPA, writing sample and good recommendations would help, along with your professional background, study abroad and teaching experience. Since the Spanish program is one of the largest (along with the French and Arabic) it would be advisable to have your application completed as early as possible to be read in the admissions pool.
Yes, I agree. A friend of mine was rejected from the Chinese MA program two years in a row and another didn’t get into the doctoral program because the dual language competency was not deemed graduate level; both were stellar candidates. I also know a few Middlebury MA and doctoral graduates and I myself spent a summer at the Italian school. At the graduate level, it’s a totally different scenario from applying as a non-degree candidate. The Master’s and doctoral programs are extremely selective and include oral and written exams along with transcripts, recs, statement of purpose etc depending on the language program to which you are applying. Admission even then is only provisional; you are required to perform and maintain the academic standard set by the program before you are considered a degree candidate. Language study at Middlebury is a rigorous but rewarding experience and is not for the faint of heart! After all, they are known to set the bar for language study. Hope this helps…
