Why am I forced to learn Spanish in my American school?

donesod1 asked:

I just don’t get why people who came from hispanic countries can’t learn English. My entire family’s Italian, they had to learn English when they moved here in the late 1800′s, and so did all of your ancestors who came here too. So give me a solid reason why I have to take Spanish.

good question..most of your weak politians, Obama being one, voted against our language English as the main one to be spoken.
actually there is a letter written by a general of the armed forces that wrote to 33 senators and told them all, why they should have voted for English.
being overly senstive to mexicans is down right outragious

What kind of school do you go to?

I mean, in elementary it was mandatory that we take Spanish class (not that I learned anything).

But in middle and high school we have the freedom to pick which language, or no language class at all.

It must be because you’re school *****. =\ I agree, America speaks English, immigrants must learn it.

EDIT: Okay ppl hear are reading too much into this. He’s not against learning any language at all, just being forced to learn Spanish.

And to the person who said “If you moved to a different country its not like you would be eager to memorize and study a whole new language just to make other people happy.”- are you condoning having all Americans learn Spanish because the Spanish immigrated here?

Isn’t it an unspoken rule that you learn the language of the county you move to? You wouldn’t go to Korea and say “All these Koreans should learn English because I speak English and I don’t want to have to learn Korean.” It’s not logical.

Yes, learning languages definitely broadens horizons and teaches you culture- but only if you want to learn it. Maybe the OP is interested in something besides Spanish.

In my opinion, I think it’s beneficial for Americans to know at least some Spanish, but being force fed it isn’t exactly reasonable.

I dont understand what is wrong with learning another language what can it hurt

because not all Americans arecaucasian and speak english. we have a very diverse country and you should feel lucky that you have a chance to learn a new language. If you moved to a different country its not like you would be eager to memorize and study a whole new language just to make other people happy.

Lets all just stop complaining and be happy with the life we have.

Did you ever think because it could broaden your horizons? In Europe people are taught & speak various languages including English.

Because learning another language enriches almost every level of your own life. If you don’t want to enrich your life, well, I feel sorry for you.

It is important to understand that there are other people in the world with different world views, and different cultures. If you ever want to go see a movie in its original language, it’s nice to know that language (ok. Spanish is only one such language, but most of us can only learn one at a time.) Same of literature. Even understanding literature that is translated from the original language is better understood if you actually understand the original language.

Lastly, if you REALLY want to be educated in your own language, you need to learn a second one…it’s kind of like a mirror. Imagine putting makeup on without a mirror. You can do it, it’s just a lot easier and better when you use the mirror. Same can be said of language. You can learn your own language without learning a second language, but it comes much better if you have that second language to help you along…

Your grandparents had two langauges…why can’t you?

And last point of all: we are better educated today, and we understand all of the above points, which were less understood 100 years ago.

A requirement for graduation is three years of a foreigh language. You are usually give options of French, Spanish and german, plus sign language

I was also not a fan of Spanish in school. You should take a language of choice and not be forced. I find the Japanese culture and language very interesting, so that is what I study. I hated Spanish in school because I had no interest and was forced.

I guess in a way you could say that times are changing. Before both Americans and the Brits were very strict on making sure anything and everything spoke English. The American teachers used to punish French Cajuns if they spoke French in the classroom. Likewise, I believe the same thing happened in Ireland, Scotland and Wales for a while. But now it seems that English-speaking countries are somewhat more tolerant to the speaking and learning of other langauges.
I honestly think that it’s great having the ability to learn another language. Other countries are constantly learning English and American students are just as capable of learning another language.
Just try to keep an open mind.

I don’t like Spanish either, and I was forced to take it in 8th grade.

People from Hispanic countries do learn English. I’m Mexican-American and my parents moved here over 25 years ago and they learned English. There is no reason people should blame Latinos for having to take Spanish in school.
Plus, Spanish is one of the buisness languages…if you wanted to be a buisnessman/woman, it’s best you know Spanish.
It’s also better if you know more than one language…it makes you look better.

If you don’t want to take it, also, don’t take it. Its that simple.

Learning another language is good, but I don’t understand why they don’t offer more languages other than Spanish? My cousins live in Switzerland and they are required to know 5 languages: German, English, French, Italian, and Swiss. (Plus they know Hungarian.)
Being bilingual is beneficial (I speak English and Hungarian), but if you don’t want to learn Spanish, take French or something!

Liberal politics, including giving our country over to the mexicans and anybody else who’d care to have it, is why. It’s the same reason I can’t find which part of the labels on goods at the store I can actually read since so much mexican (not spanish) is on the labels. And then, “Make A Banana” and “southsid . . .” have it down pretty good too. God Bless you.

Maybe studying a foreign language will make it just a wee bit less easy for paranoid, ****** politicians to manipulate you with ignorant propaganda?

  • How To Learn Spanish Online

Because English-speaking people SHARE this world with others. We are not alone or better than anyone else. Learning another language enhances your education and skills and keeps you from being a mono-lingual, close-minded ___. Oh, never mind – it’s probably too late anyhow. How sad.

  • Learn Spanish Conjugation

Learning another language has always been part of school curriculum. You’ll find that in any country; it’s good practice to know more than one language not only for cultural reasons but also for future opportunities. People who know more than one language always get farther ahead in life.
If you’re only being given the choice of learning Spanish, it’s possible that you live in an area where Spanish is predominant so it would be of benefit to you to learn it.
I agree that people should learn English for it would be to their benefit too. It’s only fair they would at least try, out of respect for the country (that has always used English as their common language) that has taken them in.

I am Mexican, I need practices my languages in Inglis. Can you help me and help you. OK?

  • Learning Spanish Language

I’m sorry I have to disagree with you when you say people who came from Hispanic countries can’t learn English.
1- There are millions of Spanish speaking people who also speak English.
2- There are millions of immigrants who do NOT come from Spanish speaking countries.
3- How long is it going to take you to learn to speak a foreign language, considering you’re a student and the only thing you have to do is study? You don’t have to work and support a family.
4- Have you ever thought how a person feels after having worked for 12 long hours or even more? Do you think that person can still attend classes? How is that person going to focus being tired as a dog?
5- I’m going to stop here but I still have many other things to say. I guess I’ll wait for now.

What can I tell you? Appreciate the opportunity you have to get an education. Hopefully you won’t have to emigrate to earn enough to support your family. But you never know what the future has for you. Be ready for it.

Spanish, is a good language to learn, for many reasons…you may get a job to where you has to speck it, another reason is
when a Mexican talk about you, in Spanish, you’ll know what that person said, take it… it can’t hurt, but it can help, in a long run….i bet you’ll never see a Mexican person, talking about they doesn’t what to learn how to speck English…..

The Europeans force my ancestors to stop speaking their Native Language Lakota. And to only speak English. You are given a gift to be able to speak in Italian and English. And now your given another language to learn, be thank full, that you are given an opportunity to expand your horizons

  • Verbarrator

Learning a foreign language is an academic requirement, period. That’s the law. Besides knowing another language might open your eyes for new things. The fact that this is an English-speaking nation is totally irrelevant.

I agree. I initiated my language learning last year, my freshman year of high school. Only French and Spanish were offered – and everyone takes Spanish. I went into the program thinking that I was going to have four years of a language, which would in turn put me in good favor towards the college that I wish to attend. However, at the end of last year all of the French students were informed that French was being cut from the curriculum to save budget. However, we would have it for at least 11th grade (next year). Our teacher quit, and we were given an entirely incompetent one who cannot teach – we have learned absolutely nothing. It is sad for people like me who actually want to learn French and not conform to Spanish.

Schools, like mine now, are virtually saying that if you do not take Spanish, then you are not going to college. Language is essential and required for college use, and a broad spectrum of languages should be available to the avid and curious student. Only one choice is not enough….and cutting a language after you are already in it is certainly not fair to those enrolled.

America needs to ***** down on its schooling system. The next president shall make sure of this.

you arent forced to do anything. I’m pretty sure if you go to your counselor/scheduler that you can change to a different language.
But the majority of schools require that you take a second language. its just a way to broden your horizon and learn another language. the more you evolve the smarter you are.
i wouldn’t see how you would be offended by learning another language. the funny thing is when you understand strangers speaking spanish and they have no idea that you understand them. i know plenty of people who know many languages.
and i am proud to be AMERICAN and be fluent in spanish, know some french, and even some italian.
SO BRODEN YOUR HORIZONS AND THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. GET TO LEARNIN’
regardless of where you leave i can tell you there are several languages. just know that English is the primary language in the USA
