Shogun asked:

One of my goals is to be fluent in Spanish, and I’m wondering. What city would be the best place to go to learn the language?

It would also need to be a city where I could find temporary employment to support myself there.

Thanks

Definitely in Salamanca. This is traditionally the place where people from all over the world come to learn Spanish. And employment? Well, we live in 2009, there is recession and high unemployment in Spain but give it a shot. If you want to work and work hard, who knows but learn Spanish first of all!

If learning Spanish is your goal than I would stay away from Catalonia and Basque Country. Although almost everybody in those regions speaks Spanish, they mainly speak Basque and Catalan. That rules out Barcelona.

I would try Seville if I were you.

    Hope it helps.

I studied in Madrid this past semester and loved it. Also, they speak with what’s considered the country’s standard accent so you’d definitely learn a good accent. Plus the city is huge and has THE best night life in all of Europe so you can’t go wrong there.
As far as finding temporary employment you are going to have a pretty hard time, especially if you are not an EU citizen. It might be impossible to find temporary, legal work in an office setting or something if you’re not.
But I can suggest to you what I did. To earn money while I was there I work as a private English tutor. I instructed three young Spanish children in their house 2-3 times a week depending on my schedule and theirs. I’ll recommend the websites segundamano.es and also lingobongo. Both of these sites can be used to post announcements for free stating that you are searching for people wanting to learn English. Or you can simply browse the existing announcements of people in search of an English teacher.
