Should I learn Spanish in Puerto Rico or Mexico?
Mike asked:
I’m currently learning Spanish in college and am at the intermediate level. I’m really intrigued by both Mexico and Puerto Rico because of their nearness to the US. I would like to study abroad in one of the two countries in about a year and a half. If you could give me your opinion from personal experiences while still taking financial aspects in account, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

I think that both would be great. I’m from Puerto Rico, but if you are going purely to learn Spanish I would lean very slightly towards going to Mexico (apart from the crime aspect). The Puerto Rican dialect is harder for non-native speakers to understand and pick up than the Mexican one. In terms of expense, Mexico (1 dollar = 10 Pesos) is also much cheaper, because since it is part of the US Puerto Rico uses the dollar as its official currency. However,if you are looking for the experience of living in a Latin American country, I would suggest Puerto Rico. The fact that Puerto Rico is part of the US can also be an advantage because you don’t have to deal with any paperwork regarding immigration, change money going back and forth, etc. The standard of living and level of crime is also much closer to what you would find in the US (in fact, the HDI/ Standard of Living in Puerto Rico is the same as that of England!).
Have fun no matter which one you choose and good luck!

Yo elegiria México si fuera tú, la capital méxicana debe ser el mejor lugar, te diria que vengas a España pero te queda lejos y para ser sincero no son muy bien vistos muchas veces los estadounidenses en Madrid.

I’d lean toward Mexico. It is less expensive to live there and the dialect is easier to pick up. I’ve been too Mexico and loved every second of it. Another great learning tool is Think Spanish magazine. You can Google for the web address. Best wishes to you!
