how old are you? because my language teacher told me the younger you are, the better you retain knowledge. that may not have much to do with the question, but it could help in the long run. And i’m pretty sure that if you’re past high school age, there are language classes on a College Campus near you.

Rosetta Stone is quite expensive, “How-To” books are time consuming. I would suggest just asking your friend to teach you. Invite them over to tutor you two or three nights a week, and (since it’s weird to pay your friend…) you can cook for them. That way, Your friend can teach you conversational Spanish and not Spain Spanish.

As a Spanish faculty at a reputed school I get a lot of people asking me the same question – “What is the fastest way to learn Spanish?”. You might be one of those guys.
