How to make a sustained Spanish ‘rr’ sound?

Aizhen asked:

Hi folks,

I’ve just started learning Spanish today and came across 2 sounds that seem foreign to me. Firstly, it’s the Spanish ‘r’ sound. Just for clarification, is this ‘r’ sound like a hybrid between the english ‘l’ and ‘r’ sound which produces the hard ‘r’ sound? Because this Spanish ‘r’ seems to resemble the Japanese ‘r’ sound which I’m able to emulate. If the Spanish ‘r’ sound is not what I’ve described above, then maybe I’m making the wrong sound… So please tell me whether I’m right…

Next is of the famous ‘rr’ sound which many non-native speakers have difficulty doing. I think I can vaguely force out the sound of ‘rr’ but exhaling really hard but I can hardly sustain the sound in a stable manner. It sounds unnatural and I’m sure I’m doing it the wrong way. I’ve watched a couple of youtube videos that provide instructions of how to produce the sound but haha…I haven’t succeeded yet. So I would like to ask how long have you taken to master the ‘rr’ sound? And how to do it properly?

I was wondering if anyone can give any advice on online spanish courses?

*Annie* asked:

I was planning to begin taking spanish this coming semester, but the only times that it is offered conflict with more important courses. My only other option is an online version. I have only taken one other online course, and it was very straight forward. I really want to get spanish in but I’m concerned that it may be too difficult to grasp a language online.
Does anyone have any advice, or experience with online language courses?
Thanks!
