I know that English is America’s only official language but Spanish is taught in school…so when do students begin to learn Spanish? In high school? Is learning Spanish mandatory?

I’m planning on traveling to South America later this year. I would like to spend the first month learning spanish at some sort of school or program. I am flexible as to what country I travel to, but what I would like is a school or program that is reasonably priced (around $1000 for the month) and that provides accommodation.
